An apparently unpublished variety of a very rare issue
Lot 159
KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 16.24 g, 7 h), uncertain eastern mint, circa 300-200. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. BAΣIKEΩΣ - AΛEΞAИΔP[...] (sic!) Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, lion skin draped over club; below throne, X. Price -, cf. 4058 (without X below throne). An apparently unpublished variety of a very rare issue. Very fine.
The somewhat crude but standardized style, the common spelling of N as И and the consistently light weights suggest that this and related coins (Price 4058-4058A, Price B36, CNG 90, 752 and 102, 651 etc.) are all the product of a single mint, perhaps in Galatia, or, alternatively, further east
